Ta Prom and Neak Pean

Ta Prohm was built has a buddhist temple, dedicated to the king's mother.

In a controversial decision, the Ta Prohm temple is being left more or less as it is, covered in jungle. It is not being restored, nor are the trees being removed. At this point, it would be nearly impossible to remove the trees without destroying the walls they are growing around. Its true that the trees are doing more damage to the buildings, but the effect is extraordinary to see.

These trees are immense, mostly banyon, ficus, and fig. Note the tiny figure in the foreground.

Neak Pean was built in the 12th century as a buddhist temple, and could originally be reached only by boat. It is surrounded by 4 outer pools, representing the elements earth, water, fire, and air.

Adding to the magical atmosphere, there was a small band tucked away in a corner in the forest, playing traditional Khmer instruments.
